CWM Cokeworks, Beddau
The Explore
After spending most of the night in Talgarth, Session9 and myself set off further south in search of some coke We’ve now been awake for around 30 hours, multiple cans of Monster have already been consumed to help with the drive down. Arrived at midday-ish, made our access and met up with Southside UE and Landie Man. Good to catch up with you Dan and nice to meet you Harry
We spent a few hours sampling the industrial decay of this massive site, including the sphincter-twitching ascent up the side-less walkways to the main “pulveriser†until our visit was cut short by a security guard with a mahooosive alsatian. The initial attempt at hiding and the bust itself was all captured in 1080p from Southsides and LM’s Go-pro’s, and i can’t wait to see the footage. All in all a cracking day out with top company. I think we pretty much only scratched the surface of this place but i hope you enjoy the pics anyway.
The History
This huge abandoned site was constructed in 1958 following the establishment of local mines and collieries in the previous 100 years.
The majority of the low sulphur high quality coal which was mined at the nearby CWM colliery was processed here producing high grade coke suitable for foundry use. The colliery was closed in 1986 but the coke works continued to function until 2002 when the doors were closed for the final time.
The site is to be transformed in a major regeneration programme after developers secured outline planning approval. The project will see the demolition of Cwm Coking works and over £17million worth of site remediation. There will also be landscape restoration, the development of up to 851 homes, a primary school, sports facilities and further public open space.
