Dobroyd Mills
The Explore
Got up in the middle of the night and jumped in the car armed with my camera, monster and peperami's. Arrived at my first planned target, battled through some thick thorny brambles and shit, scratched myself half to death, was literally perched on top of a fence when some workers appeared from nowhere and began shouting. I cut my losses at this point and headed onwards to Dobroyd's. Credit where it's due, I wouldn't have known about this place if it weren't for Raz and Fatpanda bringing it to the forum recently so thanks lads

The History
Dobroyd Mill is reported to have been founded in 1853 by Eli Roberts and buildings at the mill site appear on an OS map published in 1854, marked as a woollen mill. They include a building with a similar though apparently smaller footprint as the extant multi-storey spinning mill, together with a range extending north-east alongside the Jackson Dike, the mill stream which must have provided power to the early mill. In 1891 William Haigh took over the mill and began a series of expansions which continued into the C20. By 1893, the OS maps show the multi-storey mill as it now appears, a separate block to the east and further buildings to the north-east. The chimney shows as an extension to the eastern building, which may have been the engine room/boiler house. A rebuild of the possible engine house, which incorporated the chimney, was complete by 1922, and the north-eastern range was also renewed. Later in the century further buildings were added on all sides, including weaving sheds to the east and a range of large sheds to the south west.
