This coal washery was built in 1954 with funds from the American Marshall Plan.
The plant operated until 1969, when the Bxxxxx coal mine was closed. In the years that followed, the interior of the building was demolished, leaving behind a gigantic concrete body.
It was saved from demolition in 2003 when it was listed as a Historic Monument.
The task of coal washing is to wash out the impurities from the coal, mainly shale.
The coal then floats in a liquid and the slate sinks to the bottom.
Then it goes into a sieve and is sorted by size. This is then sold according to customers' requirements.
The capacity was 3,000 tons per day.
The coal was delivered directly from the shaft via a conveyor belt.
The building is a giant cube approximately 30m wide, 34m long and 30m high with 25 levels.
Renovations began between 2005 and 2009. However, the work was stopped due to lack of funds.
