The popular code name for this is House of Tears however I have taken the liberty of using a different one.
Firstly, as I personally knew some of the last family who lived there and secondly I feel it gives a misleading impression of the place.
The main building was built around 1735 however the estate can be traced back to the 12th Century and some features such as an ornate staircase and fireplace are dated around 1620. Part of the building was leased to British Telecom for use as offices and in 2001 the whole estate was put on the market for £5 million but no buyer has yet made a firm offer. The house had suffered neglect for about 15 years before this, partly due to the crippling effect of death duties. It is still in reasonable condition but not surprisingly on the buildings at risk register.
