LGHS was founded in 1876, at a time when female education was limited but expanding. The school motto was Age Quod Agis, which means "do what you do". The pupils were divided into four houses, named after the four patron saints of the United Kingdom: Andrew, David, George and Patrick. Girls were placed into the houses that their families had been in before them. I visited the Senior School which was for 11 to 18-year-olds and was built in the early 1900s. The building was used as a filming location for the fictional St Matthews' Hospital in the new ITV medical drama Monroe, which was for broadcast in 2011.
Just going through a few old photos that I'd forgotten about and found these. I visited here with Hector Rex pronto after seeing the first pics pop up from Jonesy-Gog. The day started off badly with my coach breaking down en route and I ended up arriving 3 or 4 hours later than expected. This only allowed us a couple of hours daylight so we rushed around the place taking in as much as possible. Really cool place with a very 'old school' (excuse the pun) feel to it. There were reminders of the TV set all over the shop but I've concentrated on the school in my photos. Not sure why there were quite so many science labs but there were quite a few cool things left lying around.
