In 1886 the construction of a cog railway on the Malberg began.
This makes the Mahlbergbahn the oldest rack railway in Germany.
The Mahlbergbahn experienced its heyday in the 19th century as part of the “World Bath” and summer residence of numerous monarchs and artists. Emperor Wilhelm I, the Tsars Nicolaus I and Alexander II of Russia, Richard Wagner, Jacques Offenbach, Carl-Maria von Weber Fyodor Michailowitsch Dostoevsky, to name but a few, were regularly to be found here.
92 years after construction, the railway was shut down in 1979 for economic reasons and sank into a deep sleep. On December 7, 1981, the railway, which had been in operation for 92 years without an accident, was declared a technical monument.
Thanks to a support association and numerous donations, the valley station and the wagon standing there could be renovated and restored.
The top station and the wagon standing there are unfortunately in very poor condition.
