The Reichsbahn of the GDR had a total of 14 disaster trains that were spread over the entire country and were also used regularly.
The K-Zug is the core of an aid train of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, which should officially be used for the use in natural disasters (hence the name) or serious accidents to care for the sick or injured.

In reality, however, it was used as a mobile hospital in the GDR, especially during major maneuvers under the Warsaw Treaty. Because of the secrecy, the wagons were not labeled with their intended use, as is usual with railway company cars.
There were always four railway workers on board the train who had to look after the wagons and keep them functional. Various doctors, nurses, cooks, kitchen helpers and other helpers were still on duty during the missions.

In the 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn began setting up the disaster trains. Initially, old wagons were used and it was not until the 1970s that the fleet was modernized. The trains were set up at prominent points. The train consisted mainly of 5 cars:

The first thing to do was the machine car behind the locomotive. This was necessary for the power supply of the entire train, a tent city or other facilities could also be supplied. Inside the car there were two diesel units, each with an output of 40 kW.
A workshop and accommodation for the staff were also included.

Next came the kitchen trolley, in which up to 500 meals could be prepared, with three large kettles and an electric stove.
The car had various cooling devices and a dishwasher room.

The kitchen trolley was followed by the bed trolley1 - there was space for 30 stretchers.
There was also a place for the nursing staff and a toilet in this car. The trolley is equipped with a patient call system and a telephone.

Next came the operating theater car, in which emergency operations could be carried out - all the necessary medical equipment was available (including a sterilization room).

At the end of the train, bed car 2 was running, with space for 27 stretchers. The car also had an intensive care unit with two beds, a shower and several washing facilities.

There were also functional and special wagons that were not assigned to a specific train and that were used as required.

One of these trains (D1072) drove approximately every 2 months from Beelitz (the largest military hospital outside the Soviet Union) via Teupitz to the Brest border station to transport sick and injured soldiers home. The functional staff consisted of employees from DR.
The kitchen and medical staff consisted of members of the Red Army.
There was also an armed military escort for guard duties on the train. In Teupitz the “nervous patients” were picked up.
This train consisted, as a rule, of 14 wagons, with one heater car less available in summer.

After the DR was dissolved by DBAG, the so-called K trains were no longer needed. Most of the wagons have already been scrapped.
In 1991 three complete K-trains were donated to the Hungarian Malteser Relief Service.
The trains were used in refugee camps on the border with Yugoslavia.
Today, some of the wagons serve as a homeless train in Budapest.

The K-9 shown here was previously stationed in Leipzig.

It belongs to a club and can be viewed and photographed by arrangement (usually on Saturdays).
