Mid Wales Hospital
(Previously named The Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum)
The Explore
The original weekend plan developed rapidly throughout the day before this explore, and instead of going to bed i found myself excitedly driving to Wolverhampton to meet up with Session9 at around 11pm. We quickly made our way to Shrewsbury for a bit of a stab in the dark at a place, found access into the grounds but within half an hour unfortunately also found some external motion sensors resulting in a long hide in the bushes from some torch-waving security guards. We cut our losses for self preservation due to the certainty that a second attempt would almost definitely attract police attention and headed southbound to Talgarth. Arriving at about 3am access was a little more difficult to find but after a few walk-arounds, a finger-breaking climb into, then back out of, a dead end building, some large barking alsatians, some miniature horses and a shitload of anti-vandal paint, we found our way inside. This place is full of natural decay, not vandalism, and the colours and beauty of these buildings made it a cracking explore for me. Yeah it looked nice and shiny 6 or 7 years ago but i like it in its current level of decay….
The History
The Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum, Talgarth, Brecknockshire, opened in 1903. It became the Mid Wales Hospital in 1921. The hospital came under the control of Powys District Health Authority in 1974 and Powys Health Care NHS Trust in 1993 and closed in 2000. The adjacent Wern Fawr farm was utilised by the hospital from 1903. It also owned other properties in the vicinity, which were sold off by Powys District Health Authority in the 1980s.
