Lackenby was opened to production in 1953 as a replacement for the aging Dorman Long Steel works nearby. The Dorman Long Britannia works closed in 1971 and all but gone by 1972.

The Explore;
It all started as normal, an hour or so's ride up and a cold walk to the entry point guided by Raz and soon we were making a sprint across the soggy uneven floor towards the main entrance. bit of climbing and we were 90 meters up and Shaun who isn't so good with heights was getting uncomfortable. So we did what any good friends would do, laughed and went closer to the edge. Think the highlights for me were the control rooms and the sheer size of the place.
On with the photos;
