Been keeping this one in the tank for some time, but here it is finally, not sure why am posting it or kept it quiet! This mill had been explored in 2009 all the machines were still in-situ. ON this particular weekend when I visited I took a chance explore on a Saturday afternoon with my phone only to hand, much success, so went back the next day but with a stinking hangover, so apologies for the pics!
This Mill was the site of an industrial power in the town where I grew up, I first visited this Mill when I was 8 years old and loved it, it was huge and noisy! The site of the Mill has history dating back to the 1650 where it had use for Meal Mill until 1852 when it was changed to a Paper Mill to suit the growing needs of the country for paper. The Mill remained it the same family until 1989 when it was taken over by a large mutli-national corporate paper company. This MIll ran 24/7 356 days of the year, only stopping for one week at Xmas and new year for the machines to be thoroughly checked etc. The Mill as it is locally known closed down in May 2009 with the loss of almost 400 jobs.
Once the mill was closed it only had 2 paper making machines left, No.3 & No.4. Machine No.3 contained the specialist paper and colours whilst No.4 was the largest paper and most modern machine in Europe for many years. The machines were sold and broken down and shipped overseas to their new homes. The Mill now is being stripped of all pipework so it can be utilised for a new purpose. 4 years since the Mill closed they are still stripping metal and pipework out, but its still a huge place to get around.
Here was my visit...
Machine No.4 Building, this was soley to house the actual paper machine, yes it was that big!
Inside the beast!
In the underbelly of the beast
These were once huge tanks that have now been butchered for metal.
There is a big boiler house right next to this part, with a whacking big Chimney, but couldn't get inside it! (Heard recently the metal fairies have and nicked £10k worth of copper, even though this site has onsite 24/7 security, they shipped the copper over the river with a stolen boat )
Onto Machine No. 3 Hall.
One of the old control rooms
There was a stupid amount of cranes in here
The Labs
Paper Cutting Area
Packaging Space
Cool old crane
Some of the very last remaining tools
Pics are not the best as I was still a big noob with a camera, shooting everything at the widest aperture, doh!!
Thanks for looking, you'll never get that 2 minutes back!
