On the sea side you notice a quirky, ornate Art Nouveau villa.
It is the Villa XXX.
It was built in 1907 by the Turin architect Gottardo Gussoni.
There are many Art Nouveau houses in ABC, but Villa XXX is the most magnificent.
It is right on the beach. The architect Ilaria Pozzi describes it as “edificio stilisticamente più interesting del territorio savonese”. Villa XXX is Gussoni's “momento più alto ed organico della sua attività”.
The facade is decorated with fantastic, exuberant ornaments. Most of the lime green blinds are closed, however, and some window panes are missing. The glamorous days are long gone. The villa was used for a long time as a holiday colony, then as a rehabilitation clinic. During the Second World War it served as a military hospital. You can still see faded red cross signs on the tower.
In 1933, the XXX sold them to the city of Milan, which they first turned into an international warehouse, then into a hospital during World War II, and from the 1960s onwards into a public clinic for cardiac patients.
It was completely abandoned in 1998 because the construction defects were too great.
For almost a quarter of a century, the beautiful Villa XXX has been empty and decaying. This is a shame because it is one of the most beautiful and important Italian Art Nouveau villas.
