Wigston Swimming Pool
The explore
After a successful visit to Wadkins, we made the short trip to what was Leicester’s local tourist
attraction before it got torched that night and parts apparently exploded. We shared the location
for an hour or so with some gobby kids who on first entry were busily making little camp fires. They
were quickly stamped out as we arrived. More of a ‘tick off the list’ place and not really my cup of
tea but I did enjoy going down the slide and reading some of the dumbass graffiti in the place.
Explored with Session9, Catbalou and Matt Inked.
History (different parts robbed from all over the place)
Built between 1954-1957 and finally closing in March 2014.
The existing Wigston Swimming Pool will be demolished and in its place will be built a new facility featuring a 6 lane 25m competition pool with timing
equipment and starting blocks, and a 60 station gym featuring the latest fitness equipment, this is due for completion in Spring 2015.
An extract from the Leicester mercury from Monday 2nd June “A fire caused severe damage to Wigston Swimming Pool on Sunday night.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at the swimming pool, in Station Road, Wigston Magna, at about 9.30pm.
The fire started in the reception area of the building. Four fire crews attended the scene and about 25 firefighters tackled the blaze.
A full search of the building was carried out and no-one was inside. Severe fire and smoke damage was caused to the ground and first floor.
The Fire Service Watchkeeper, Mr Wildgoose passed on the safety message that "disused buildings are not playgrounds."
I strongly disagree...
