The Mitsero Mine (also called Kokkinopezoula or Kokkinogia Mine) is located in a small village in Cyprus. This mine was opened in 1953 when a copper deposit was discovered there during the bad economic years and high unemployment.
The work in the tunnels was strenuous and very dangerous, but many residents of the surrounding villages took advantage of the opportunity and were able to support their families with hard backbreaking work by working in the dark tunnels. However, the mine was closed in 1966. The reason was a mining accident that left many dead and injured. A planned explosion to uncover additional minerals had dramatic consequences. The environment continues to suffer greatly to this day because toxic gases and a dust mixture of toxic substances were released into the flora and fauna. Many trees and animals have died in the area around the mining area. Today, a memorial stone in front of the mine shaft commemorates the victims of the dramatic accident.
In addition to the winding tower, there is also a large loading facility on the site.
The mine area is also known for the Mitsero murders. These were committed by 35-year-old Cypriot army officer Nikos Metaxas, also known as Orestis, between September 2016 and August 2018. Seven people died in these gruesome serial murders. Including two small children.
In the immediate vicinity of this mine there are the red and green lakes.
Both date back to the copper mining era, are contaminated and the water is toxic.
Copper was mined on a large scale in Cyprus.
In addition to numerous copper mines, there was also an asbestos mine (pictures of which will be provided later) and a chrome mine.
