After passing this location for some years, it soon became obvious that it was now abandoned as a result of the newly installed perimeter metal fencing as well as the boarding to various smashed windows! Having spoken with a local it transpired that the care home had actually closed a few years ago but had, until recently, remained in fairly good condition. Although I'm not a fan of exploring care homes, this was an opportunity not to be missed. Getting up early to avoid the usual curtain twitchers and dog walkers, I arrived to find a portion of the perimeter fence had been knocked down! A quick double check for any locals and I was straight in, through a side gate and into the rear yard.
From the front I had only ever seen 2 separate buildings, but from the back garden there appeared to be a further 2 buildings. Disappointedly, one of the front main buildings was boarded up tightly, so I moved onto the 2nd building (as breaking into things isn't my jam). The 2nd building was wide open, and sadly in a very poor stated, suffering from what I assume to be local kids.
Following a very quick look around, and remembering exactly why I find such locations boring, I proceeded back outside hoping that the other 2 buildings held a bit more excitement. As soon as I entered these slightly newer looking buildings I could see a few bits n bobs that gave the place a bit more character, e.g. old photo's, a walking frame, etc. A few minutes in and I began to get quite disorientated as the place was a bit of a maze. Although this section was certainly more enjoyable, I still only walked round with my mobile, not bothering to take my Nikon camera out of my bag. Having seen every inch of this location I left after half an hour feeling thankful that I was able to explore this place.
Leaving the location without incident, or being seen by the locals, it was off to check on the history of the place.
History:
Grove Villa Care in Deal is a Residential home specialising in the provision of services relating to accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care, caring for adults over 65 yrs, caring for adults under 65 yrs, learning disabilities and physical disabilities. The last inspection date here was 26th April 2019.
I was able to find the last and what appears to be final inspection of this former residential care home. Sadly, every single criteria on which the inspection was based, e.g. safety, caring, effectiveness, responsive and well-lead, all below the necessary standard, scoring both the facility and staff as 'Inadequate'. I suspect this was the last straw and possibly resulted in the place being closed down. I found it sad to think that someone's family member may have resided here and potentially received such poor care.
Well, that's about it folks. Apologies for the mobile phone pics, but residential properties just don't do it for me! Give me an underground tunnel system or Fort any day of the week.
Until next time people, this is Urban Ginger Hog signing off!!
