Smudges has been known by numerous other names over the years from The Crofters Arms Hotel to McGees to Moghuls Palace but has always retained it's charm and character.

A true time capsule rotting away in the heart of Bolton. Featuring some stunning hand-carved bars and one of two of this type of revolving doors that exist the other located in a grand hotel in London.

What a lovely old pub! Must've been a real stunner inside in its day with that dark wood panelling and stained glass. Shame to see it so dilapidated

thanks for the photos,

my grandad, jim morris was the landlord of the crofters hotel 1969 - 1982, and is where i started my working life after leaving school in 1976,

happy days.

My uncle , Jim MacDonnell and his wife Jean (Elsie) we’re licencees there circa 1942.

My mother was living/working there when my father (who was in the Air Force) , saw her on the stairs and told his friend that he was going to marry her.... and did! 

Sadly Jean died in a car crash that year too...

Good report mate. Got a couple of mates from Bolton so I assumed this was a typical open pub in the area ?.

Looks like it was a really stylish joint before the rot set in, the stained glass is lovely. It’s interesting to read a couple of memories of the place too, thanks for sharing those!
