This swimming pool is one of the many achievements of a comprehensive national plan that was launched in the 1970s and was called "1000 swimming pools" and continued until the early 1980s.
The goal of this proactive program was to make swimming available to all French by enabling municipalities to purchase standardized equipment at a moderate cost. So several types were designed, but it was the "sunflower" type that was the most successful with 183 models built.
The dome made of polyester tiles, developed by engineer Thémis Constantinidis, consists of 36 metal arches, including 12 retractable ones, so that the pool can be opened at an angle of 120 ° in summer. Every second arch is pierced with 7 portholes, which contributes to the futuristic appearance of the work.
This flying saucer-shaped swimming pool will have shaped thousands of French school children.
The XXXXX closed its doors in 2004 and should be demolished.
The specialty here is an "Alfa" dome with rectangular openings.
